Dental Crowns: A Fresh Perspective on Dental Crowns
Crowns are a staple of many dental practices in Tysons Corner, Virginia. However, at Farhoumand Dentistry, we do things differently. We have made considerable investments in state-of-the-art technologies and premium materials and products, which allow our team to provide the best possible treatment experience and support optimal and long-lasting results.
Why are crowns so common?
They are highly versatile! Dental crowns generally replace the white portion of the tooth visible above the gumline when you smile. They may be well-suited for big cosmetic cases; for instance, they can be fitted on top of a worn or poorly shaped tooth to create a more attractive and uniform appearance. They may also be used to restore the health and function of decayed, cracked, and otherwise damaged teeth. In fact, crowns play an important role in preserving teeth, as they can strengthen a tooth that has been treated with root canal therapy. They can even be used to replace teeth!
How do crowns replace teeth?
Instead of fitting on top of any remaining natural tooth structure, like a crown used to restore a damaged tooth, the crown is either used as an anchor in a dental bridge or as the visible attachment to a dental implant. The bridge, which contains the replacement tooth (or teeth), is held in place by crowns cemented to the neighboring teeth on either side of the gap(s). The dental implant acts like the root of a tooth. It is attached to a crown that serves as the tooth’s visible part. Once the implant is securely placed in the jawbone, it provides stability for the dental crown or replacement tooth, similar to how a natural tooth root works.
What special technologies do you use?
With CEREC computer-aided design and manufacturing technologies, we can handle every step in the crown process at our office. We are still utilizing the highest-quality laboratories for certain cases. Our team can design, fabricate, and place your crown onsite as appropriate. We have eliminated many of the hassles traditionally associated with getting a crown โ the need for a fragile temporary crown, the wait. At the same time, the lab makes the crown, the return visit(s), and the use of messy, gag-inducing impressions. As a computer-assisted process, we can gather information about your mouth non-invasively and also minimize the risk of human error. So, these crowns are made precisely the first time. In the rare event that adjustments must be made, we can complete those quickly.
And what special materials do you use?
We primarily craft CEREC crowns from a big block of premium Zirconia/zirconium dioxide. This metal-free material is strong, tissue-compatible, and looks great. Likewise, we use other ceramics such as porcelain (also known for its stain resistance) and e.maxยฎ, a glass ceramic known as lithium disilicate. These options, too, are highly regarded for their exceptional aesthetics, safety, durability, and conservative preparations (utmost healthy tissue is preserved and not drilled away).

What is a dental crown? When is it recommended?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that completely covers a tooth to restore its strength, shape, and appearance. Crowns are often recommended for teeth that are cracked, severely worn down, or weakened after a root canal. Theyโre also used to support large fillings or to cover dental implants. Essentially, a crown acts like a protective helmet for a vulnerable tooth.
How do crowns improve both function and appearance?
Crowns are designed to blend in with your natural smile while restoring durability. They allow you to bite and chew without discomfort and prevent further damage to the tooth underneath. Because they are carefully shaped and color-matched, crowns also improve cosmetic concerns, such as discoloration, uneven shape, or gaps. Many patients find that crowns not only protect their teeth but also boost their confidence when smiling.
What materials are available for crowns?
Crowns can be made from several different materials, including porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, metal alloys, or a combination of porcelain fused into metal. Porcelain and ceramic are especially popular because they closely mimic natural tooth enamel. Metal crowns, while not as aesthetic, are exceptionally strong and often used on molars. Dr. Farhoumand will help you choose the material that best balances appearance, durability, and cost for your unique needs.
What should I expect during the crown procedure?
The process typically takes two appointments. On the first visit, the tooth is reshaped to make space for the crown, and impressions are taken. We place a temporary while the permanent one is crafted by a dental laboratory. On the second visit, we remove the temporary crown, and your permanent restoration is carefully fitted, adjusted, and cemented. The result is a secure, natural-looking tooth that feels comfortable right away.
Do dental crowns hurt?
Receiving a crown is generally not painful. Local anesthesia ensures the tooth is numb during preparation. After the procedure, itโs normal to experience mild sensitivity or tenderness, especially around the gums. This usually subsides within a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Once your new crown is in place, you should be able to chew, smile, and speak comfortably.
How long will a crown last?
With proper care, crowns typically last 10 – 15 years, and many last even longer. Their lifespan depends on factors such as oral hygiene, dietary habits, and whether you grind your teeth. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and attending routine dental visits will help extend the life of your crown. If you clench or grind your teeth, a custom nightguard can provide extra protection.
What do crowns cost? Does insurance usually cover them?
The cost of a crown varies depending on the material chosen and the complexity of the treatment. In most cases, dental insurance will cover a portion of the expense when the crown is medically necessary to restore function. Cosmetic crowns may have more limited coverage. At Farhoumand Dentistry, weโll provide a clear estimate before treatment begins and offer financing options to make your care more affordable.
