CEREC Same-Day Crowns Q & A

Farhoumand Dentistry

What is the CEREC crown process?

CEREC crowns are custom crowns that Dr. Foad and Dr. Farah design and create in the Farhoumand Dentistry office. They capture images of your damaged tooth with a specialized camera, and then the computer program designs a custom restoration based on those images.

The program manufactures the restoration on the spot, taking only around an hour. They then apply the restoration to your damaged tooth with a strong dental bonding agent.

Are CEREC crowns different than traditional crowns?

CEREC crowns are durable porcelain, just like traditional crowns are. While they're identical concerning appearance and function, they have a significant advantage. CEREC crowns give you the restoration you need in just one visit, while traditional crowns usually require 2-3 visits to the dentist.

Traditional crowns usually require a temporary crown, one that's worn while the permanent one is being replaced. With CEREC, the first crown you get is your permanent crown.

When is a CEREC crown needed?

Your dentist may recommend a CEREC crown in situations such as:

  • If you have a chipped tooth
  • If you have a cracked tooth
  • If you have a broken tooth
  • If your tooth is severely discolored and doesn't respond to whitening
  • If you have a significantly worn tooth
  • If one of your teeth is irregularly shaped or sized
  • If you have a new dental implant
  • If you had a root canal

What is the lifespan of a CEREC crown?

CEREC crowns have the same longevity of other porcelain crowns, which is 10-15 years on average. There are a few of key things you can do to maximize the longevity of your new CEREC crown, including:

  • Dental checkups twice a year
  • Teeth cleanings twice a year
  • Brushing twice a day
  • Flossing carefully around the crown at least once a day

Does dental insurance cover CEREC crowns?

Each dental insurance provider has different coverage guidelines, which may or may not cover CEREC crowns. In general, dental insurance covers crowns when they're needed to strengthen and protect the tooth.

However, if they're deemed cosmetic, such as if you get a crown purely to conceal discoloration, insurance is less likely to cover it. Check with your insurance provider for specific coverage.
