What is TMJ?

TMJ covers a group of disorders that can affect the jaw. When the joint connections for the jaw and the skull malfunction, TMJ can result. This may cause a variety of issues with basic functions like eating and speaking.

What are the symptoms of TMJ?

You can generally expect to experience one or more of the following symptoms if you're affected by TMJ.

  • Pain while chewing
  • A clicking sound when moving your jaw
  • Jaw pain while yawning
  • Jaw pain while speaking
  • Jaw swelling
  • Jaw locking when trying to open your mouth
  • Chronic headaches
  • Chronic earaches
  • Feeling of pressure behind the eyes
  • Neck pain

TMJ symptoms may be sporadic, but they won't go away entirely unless you get treatment. Often, the symptoms worsen until the pain is nearly unbearable if you don't get help.

Are you at risk for TMJ?

Although anyone can develop TMJ, the following groups have an increased risk.

  • Women, particularly premenopausal women
  • Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis sufferers
  • Individuals with a history of grinding their teeth)
  • Individuals who suffer from a connective-tissue disease
  • Fibromyalgia sufferers

How does a dentist treat TMJ?

Dr. Foad and Dr. Farah treat all conditions, disorders, and diseases of the mouth and jaw. That means they’re uniquely suited to deliver effective TMJ treatment that's customized for your specific needs.

They take the most conservative and least invasive approach to TMJ treatment possible. Some patients may get relief by making lifestyle changes like minimizing stress and being mindful of jaw clenching or a simple bit adjustment. If lifestyle changes aren't effective or don't deliver enough relief, Drs. Foad and Farah Farhoumand may recommend a custom oral appliance.

Your oral appliance will fit your mouth precisely, and it won’t be uncomfortable or painful. Furthermore, you'll only wear the oral appliance when you sleep. Over time, it will gradually and gently reposition your jaw until it's in the right position and you're symptom-free.

If you’re tired of dealing with TMJ symptoms like jaw pain or chronic headaches, call or go online to book an appointment with Farhoumand Dentistry today.
