What are composite resin fillings?

Composite fillings are restoration materials that are made from a mixture of acrylic resin and finely ground glass particles. They’re perfectly safe, durable, and effective. One of the main reasons our patients love composite fillings is that they blend seamlessly with the color of their natural teeth. No more worrying about a metallic appearance when smiling and laughing with others. These fillings are an excellent solution for repairing teeth that have been damaged by cavities, cracks, or chips. Your dentist at Farhoumand Dentistry carefully matches the composite material to your tooth color, ensuring it not only restores function but also enhances the appearance of your teeth.

Understanding composite dental fillings and why they’re a great choice for restoring the smile

Concerning dental care, preserving your beautiful smile is always a top priority. One of the most common dental treatments out there is fillings, and if you’ve been hearing about composite dental fillings but aren't quite sure what they are, you’re in the right place! Composite fillings are an incredible choice for those looking to restore their teeth while keeping their smile natural-looking and flawless. Dr. Foad Farhoumand and his skilled associates at Farhoumand Dentistry of Tysons Corner, Vienna, Virginia, are here to make sure you understand all your options, so let's take a closer look!

Why should I choose composite resin fillings?

The benefits do not stop at aesthetics. Composite fillings are also incredibly adaptable. Since the material bonds directly to your tooth, it provides extra support to the remaining tooth structure, preventing further damage or breakage. Plus, the minimally invasive procedure means that less of your natural tooth is removed compared to some other types of fillings.

Where can composite resin fillings be used?

Composite fillings are also versatile enough to be used on both front and back teeth. Whether it is for those pearly whites you show off when you smile or the hard-working molars responsible for chewing, they can be used successfully.

How do I take care of my composite resin fillings?

Taking care of your composite fillings is simple. Stick to your regular dental hygiene routine. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and don’t forget to visit your dental team at Farhoumand Dentistry for check-ups and cleanings. With proper care, your composite fillings can stay strong and beautiful for many years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dental filling? Why might I need one?

Dental fillings are used to repair teeth damaged by decay. When a cavity forms, the decayed area is removed, and the space is filled with a durable, biocompatible material to protect the tooth and restore its function. This prevents bacteria from spreading and helps maintain the tooth’s structure and strength.

What materials are used for dental fillings?

Fillings are primarily made from composite resin or porcelain, both of which blend naturally with your teeth and are mercury-free. Amalgam fillings (silver) , which contain mercury, are being phased out due to environmental and health concerns. At Farhoumand Dentistry, we only use composite resin or porcelain , for superior strength, aesthetics, and sustainability.

How is a filling procedure performed?

The tooth is numbed to ensure comfort before removing any decay. Once cleaned and disinfected, the dentist layers and cures the composite resin using a special light. The filling is then shaped and polished to match the natural contour of your tooth, providing a smooth and seamless finish.

Are dental fillings painful?

The procedure is typically painless because local anesthesia is used. You may feel light pressure or vibration during treatment, but no sharp pain. After the anesthetic wears off, you might experience minor sensitivity to biting pressure for a short period, but this subsides quickly.

How long do dental fillings last?

The longevity of a filling depends on the material used and your oral care routine. Composite resin fillings usually last 7 - 10 years, while porcelain can last even longer with proper care. Older amalgam fillings, however, can deteriorate over time due to expansion and contraction, which allows bacteria to seep underneath, causing decay or fractures. This is one of the reasons these materials are no longer preferred.

Can old fillings be replaced?

Yes. Fillings that have become cracked, worn, or loose can and should be replaced to protect the tooth from decay. If you have old amalgam fillings, replacing them is recommended, not just for cosmetic reasons, but because amalgam expands and contracts with temperature changes. This repeated stress can cause microscopic gaps where bacteria enter, leading to decay or weakening of the surrounding tooth. Composite resin and porcelain alternatives are safer, more stable, and provide a natural look.

Does insurance cover dental fillings?

Most dental insurance plans cover fillings as a basic restorative service. However, coverage often depends on the material used. Some plans fully cover amalgam (metal) fillings but only partially cover composite resin. If your plan does not cover the full cost of the composite, then the patient is responsible for the difference between the amalgam allowance and the composite fee. Our office can help verify coverage and provide transparent cost estimates before treatment. Our office only offers composite or porcelain fillings.

How can I care for my teeth after getting a filling?

Caring for a tooth with a filling is like maintaining natural teeth. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and avoid biting hard objects that can stress the filling. Regular check-ups at Farhoumand Dentistry allow your dentist to monitor your fillings for any wear or leakage, ensuring long-lasting protection and oral health.
