Porcelain + crowns = A winning combination for your smile!

Porcelain veneers are the secret behind many celebrities' "perfect" teeth. So, it is no wonder the general public has caught on and wants them, too! Porcelain as a dental material is considered the next closest thing we have to natural tooth enamel. Its translucency and ability to reflect light are similar to the natural tooth structure. Plus, dental porcelain is not the fragile material you may assume it to be, and some of today's performance ceramics are as strong if not stronger than metals. We apply a similarly exacting approach to crafting crowns at our office in Tysons Corner, Virginia.

Why would I need a crown in the first place?

Porcelain veneers are largely a cosmetic procedure. These thin shells of handcrafted porcelain are applied to the surfaces of "imperfect" teeth. Once secured, they cover up the flaw, be it a chip, small crack, or excess space between two teeth. Now, porcelain crowns are different. While they can be applied for more extensive cosmetic cases, they are often associated with restorative dentistry treatment – to resolve an underlying oral health condition. For instance, our dentists may recommend crowns to hold together broken teeth, fix a big area of decay, or replace a worn or large filling, and they are typically the final step in the root canal process.

How are crowns applied?

Crowns are designed to fit on top of the natural tooth. Typically, the process of delivering a dental crown requires at least two appointments. The first appointment is mainly for preparation, where damaged areas of the tooth are removed. We also collect information about the tooth and its neighbors, which our lab uses to make your permanent crown. We use only the finest materials and labs. So, when you return to our office to place your permanent crown, we know you will be thrilled by it!

As appropriate, we can even provide you with your new crown in just one visit. The need for a temporary crown, a return visit, and the wait while an outside lab makes the permanent restoration is avoided.

How can you make my crown in one appointment?

We use a computer-aided system called CEREC. This technology includes special software and equipment that allows us to plan, design, fabricate, and cement the crown in a day at our office in Tysons Corner, Virginia.

How long should my crown last?

It depends on how well you take care of your teeth! That is really the only limitation when it comes to porcelain crowns or other restorations made from this attractive, durable, and versatile material. The porcelain holds up and wears very well and also "gets along well" with surrounding tissues. Over time, you should not notice any changes in the material's appearance, unlike crowns made from metals that tend to develop a dark discoloration at the gumline. Here again, though, oral care at home and professional services at Farhoumand Dentistry are essential to keep your crown looking and functioning at its best. Frequently Asked Questions

What are porcelain crowns, and how do they benefit my smile?

Porcelain crowns are custom-made caps that cover and restore damaged or weakened teeth. They are made from premium dental porcelain that closely mimics the natural look of tooth enamel. These crowns not only enhance the aesthetics of your smile by blending seamlessly with your natural teeth but also provide strength and durability, ensuring long-lasting results.

How is the porcelain crown procedure performed at Farhoumand Dentistry?

The process begins with a comprehensive examination of your tooth to assess its condition. If a crown is deemed necessary, the affected tooth is prepared by removing any decay or damaged areas. Impressions are then taken to create a custom crown that fits precisely. At Farhoumand Dentistry, we utilize advanced technology to ensure the crown matches the color and shape of your natural teeth, providing a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing result.

Are porcelain crowns suitable for all teeth?

Porcelain crowns are a great option for repairing teeth that are noticeable when smiling, particularly the front teeth, because of their lifelike look. They are also suitable for molars that require restoration. However, the suitability of a porcelain crown depends on various factors, including the location of the tooth, the extent of damage, and your overall oral health. A consultation with our dental team will help determine the best option for your specific needs.

How long do porcelain crowns last, and how should I care for them?

Porcelain crowns can last between 10 to 15 years or more with proper care. To ensure their longevity, it's essential to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing and flossing. Avoiding habits like grinding your teeth, chewing on hard objects, or consuming staining substances can also help preserve the appearance and integrity of your crown.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with porcelain crowns?

Porcelain crowns are generally safe and well-tolerated. Some patients might notice a temporary sensitivity to hot or cold after the procedure. This sensitivity typically fades away within a few days. It's essential to recognize that although porcelain is strong, it may be more prone to chipping or breaking when subjected to extreme force. Our dental team will provide guidance on how to protect your crown and maintain optimal oral health.

How do porcelain crowns compare to other types of crowns?

Compared to metal crowns, porcelain crowns offer a more natural and aesthetic appearance, making them ideal for visible teeth. While metal crowns are known for their strength and durability, they may not blend as seamlessly with natural teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine the strength of metal with the aesthetics of porcelain, but may have a visible metal line at the gumline. The choice between these options depends on factors like the location of the tooth, cosmetic preferences, and functional requirements.

Does insurance cover the porcelain crown procedure?

Dental insurance coverage for porcelain crowns varies depending on your specific plan and the reason for the crown placement. It may be partially covered if the crown is deemed medically necessary, such as restoring a tooth after a root canal. However, coverage may be limited if it's considered a cosmetic procedure. Our team at Farhoumand Dentistry will work with you to understand your insurance benefits and provide options to make the procedure as affordable as possible.
